This week the Construction Safety Week ran their yearly construction safety week campaign. The focus this year was on holistic safety, which means embracing a total wellness approach that includes paying attention to the body and mind in everything we do.
In the construction industry, workers have always dealt with mental illness, in fact, according to the CDC the construction industry has the second highest rate of suicide. This statistically puts construction workers at a higher risk for mental health issues. That is why it is important to have conversations about issues involving depression, stress, anxiety, and substance abuse among construction workers. Awareness is the key to creating an open space for construction workers to talk about mental struggles and ask for support.
The construction leaders within the industry have come together to provide resources and education that will further drive a collective commitment to holistic safety. A job in the construction industry is both physically and mentally demanding and preventing construction accidents or injuries is more than PPE, equipment inspections and following important policies and protocols set by the OSHA. To create a safe environment for construction workers it means recognizing how important mental health is to everyone’s overall safety.
